Iodised Salt

Introduction
Iodised salt, also known as "Medicinal Salt' is rdinary common salt treated with potassium iodate 50 as to induce right quantity of Iodine in the diet to Iht the iodine deficiency as pertaining in many ar- of our country. The deficiency of Iodine causes ly diseases out of which goitre is most common. 5alt being the most commonly used commodity which? available at cheap rate is a good carrier of Iodine.
both for rich and poor a like.

Product
Common Salt is in the form of colourless cubic crystals. It decrepitates when heated. It is readily soluble in water with pH value between 6.7-7.3 of aqueous solution. Iodized salt contains 25 ppm of Potassium Iodate (KIO3), which is equivalent of 3.0025%. Iodised salt is more stable in moisture absorbing characteristics in open atmosphere. The stability of Iodized salt depends upon various factors like moisture content, polarised light, impurities like ferric chloride & Magnesium Sulphate. Stabiliser may be added to retard decomposition of salt.

Market
The demand of Iodised salt is more than 60 lakh tonnes per year as per the Ministry of Health Survey. To meet this requirement, more production capacities are required. Further due to may parts of our country are deficient in Iodine, Ministry of Industry has started crash programme to Iodise the common salt to check the problem of goitre; deafness, physical deforming and mental retardation.

Suggested Capacity
The minimum economic capacity for the production of Iodised Salt is 30.000 Tonnes per annum
Land & Building
The unit requires about 2000 Sq. mtrs. of the land with covered area of 600 sq. mtrs.
Raw Materials
The requirement of raw materials for the production of 30,000 Tonnes of Iodised Salt per annum is as under:
Raw Salt                        :              30,000 MT
Potassium lodate            :                   800 Kg

Utilities
The unit will require a total connected load of 100 KVA and a maximum demand of 80 KVA. Water requirement is about 1500 KL per annum.

Manufacturing Process
The Raw Salt is fed to conical shaped hopper and is crushed with a High carbon steel Roll crusher to the size of 2-3 mm. This salt is conveyed through an inclined conveyor to discharge point at ground. The 0.1% aqueous solution of potassium lodate is sprayed over a mixing bed of salt of thickness 10-15cm, by air pressure. This iodised salt in mixed in a horizontal mixer for uniform mixing of Iodine. This salt is bagged from the hopper in fixed amount. Altanatively it can be packed in one Kg poly pack for direct sales.

Plant & Machinery
  1. Roll Crusher size 75 x 30 cm with SS hopper
  2. Belt conveyor: 3 roll type 450mm width & 6.8 mtrs length.
3..3  Spraying chamber (SS) for Potassium   lodate solution.
  1. Mixing Screw Conveyor, 3 meter long
  2. SS Storage tank (100 Itrs) for potassium lodate solution.
  3. Air Compressor, Capacity 26 c.f.m.
  4. Personnels

The unit requires to employ about 59 persons including staff for office and factory for production supervision and administration.
Estimated Cost of the Project
The project cost for setting up the unit to manufacture of 30,000 Tonnes of Iodised Salt per annum is estimated to Rs. $164383.56 as follows:
1.   Land & site development                               $23287.67
2.   Building                                                         $27397.26
3.   Plant & machinery                                        $34246.57
4.   Technical know-how & engineering
fees                                                                     $4109.58
5.   Other Misc. fixed assets                               $20547.93
6.   Preliminary & preoperative expenses          $13698.63
7.   Margin money for working capital                $34246.57
8.   Contingencies                                                $6849.31
TOTAL                                                                $164383.56
Suggested Means of Financing
1.  Long term loan                       :                         $109589.04
2.  State cash subsidy                  :                         $17465.75.76
3.  Promoters capital                  :                          $37328.76
 TOTAL                                    :                           $164383.56

Subsidy is taken as 15% of the Fixed Capital Investment, however it varies from state to state, ranging from 10% to 25% depending upon the category of identified backward area.
